I have often wondered about what kind of presence we have as people. Do the things that we say or do really make a difference? In my experience, our presence is mostly noticed by those we are closest to (examples: friends, relatives, lovers and even acquaintances).
People know that they affect others, but most of the time we overlook the small things. I say this because I have had my share of bad days and nothing really catches you off guard more than a simple kind word from a stranger. Do you know why? Do you know why something so small can mean so much? The simple truth is because it came from someone that you don’t know, may never see again and they gain nothing from being kind. Sometimes having someone smile at you when you are feeling low is all you really need. It helps you to feel like you’re not alone in the world (even if you are). The presence a person has from a single kindness is powerful. Even after that moment passes, you may forget the person’s face. You will not forget the kindness. That is the impact that this random person’s presence had on you. This kind of thing happens all the time. It happens everywhere.
If you ever have a day where you believe that your presence is not needed or not important, remember this: We all have a purpose, but it might not be something huge in the eyes of society. It could simply be that you help someone get through their day. It could be that your kind word, simple gesture or brilliant smile eases someone else’s burden. The impact of helping someone (anyone) get through a rough day, feel less alone, feel the strength to keep moving forward or not give up is one powerful presence.
